How Do You Prepare to Bath Your Dog?
You would think that with all the outside activities your dog may be involved in, that he/she should be bathed daily. But first of all, your dog doesn’t mind being a little bit dirty or smelly (much like some children I know), it’s you, the dog owner who minds. It’s not a pleasant experience to be around a stinky pooch who’s coat is not nice to touch and pet. So it’s unavoidable that on occasion your dog needs to hit the shower!
Keep in mind that for the most part, it’s not healthy for your dog to be bathed too frequently, doing so will cause his skin to dry out due to the fact that you have removed all the healthy oils that keep his skin from being irritated and itchy.
How often should your dog be bathed?
There really is no hard, fast rule as to the frequency for doggy baths. A lot depends on the breed of the dog, its type of activity, and its personal physical make-up. One lady who had a Shar Pei, bathed her dog every week, and by the next day, the dog smelled like it needed to be bathed again. She may have been doing something wrong or using the wrong products at bath time, but this is just an example of how each dog and each situation is different. In general, probably a good rule of thumb would be a monthly bath.
Whatever the frequency you choose, it’s important to use the right shampoo; it should be strong enough to clean, but mild enough not to irritate. If you have trouble choosing the right shampoo for your canine, ask your veterinarian or groomer for suggestions.
Where will the bath take place?
One of the first things you will need to decide is where you’re going to bathe your dog, you have several options:
- If your dog is small enough, you can always use the sink, a large bucket, or a purchased bathing bathtub designed for bathing dogs.
- If your dog is medium to larger, you can use the bathtub (it’s easier for a large dog to get in and out by themselves and they won’t be overwhelmed with the size), you can use a kiddie pool outside if the weather is nice, but one of the most convenient places is in a walk-in shower.
- To make your life easier and bath time not such a struggle is to do it somewhere that you have access to a hand held shower or spray nozzle.
- Another great option is to take your dog somewhere that doggie self-wash is offered. BowWow Fun Towne has a self-wash facility where you can bring Fido – talk about a convenient way to bath your dog!
