Have Fun At The Dog Park With These Safety Tips
More and more people are using dog parks as places their dogs can have an off leash outing, where they can socialize with other dogs, and where they can just have fun and exercise.
Obviously, there are a lot of good reasons to take your dog to a dog park, but there are things you need to consider before you head off for a fun afternoon…things that will keep your dog safe and healthy.
Begin by checking online about the dog park you are interested in going to, see what other people have to say about it. Then know the rules of the park so you are aware of any requirements they may have about such things as collars, toys, leashes, and dog sizes and ages. It’s not a bad idea to make a trip to the park without your pooch, just to get a feel for what to expect.
Dog Park Trip Health Tips…
- Be sure your dog is vaccinated – Fido should have all his vaccines totally caught up. Because of how many dogs visit the parks, there are a lot of infectious diseases your dog could be exposed to, such as:
- canine flu
- parvovirus
- kennel cough
- Puppies who are under the age of 5-6 months old may not have all their vaccinations, so keep them home until they do.
- Come prepared – Whether or not there is water for drinking at the park, bring a bottle of water and a bowl to keep your pup hydrated. Even though it’s an off leash park, don’t leave your leash at home. You never know when you might need to rescue or remove Fido from a situation.
- Don’t forget the bags – No one wants to step in what your dog may have left behind, so be responsible and pick it up…it’s not only considerate, but it’s healthier.
Dog Park Trip Safety Tips…
- Master his master’s commands – Your pup should be able to obey the basic commands, such as sit, stay, and come. This will be helpful when it’s time to go home, and a necessity if there are hazards or incidents with other dogs.
- Leave the treats and toys at home – Other dogs will most likely want to share, even if your dog doesn’t, they may even try to take them for themselves. This could cause aggressive behaviors that could lead to fights.
- Understand the body language of dogs – Watch for such things as crouching, staring or aggressive posture. These could be indicators that possible trouble is brewing.
- Be alert and aware – Though you may visit briefly with other dog owners, avoid getting too involved in conversation, social media or other distractions. Remember, this outing is for your dog, and you should be keeping your eyes on him to avoid aggression or bad behavior.
- Don’t overstay your welcome – Just like Disneyland is the happiest place on earth until children get tired, a dog park is a great time until Fido gets tired. Even your dog can get tired and irritable. Plan for 30-60 minute park visits.
- Check it out – Each time you go to the park, before you enter, take a look around, make sure it’s a happy and safe doggy community before you go in.
