How Can You Help Dogs In Need?

Although it’s great to help dogs in need throughout the year, the holiday season is an especially good time.
How can you turn away from those sweet eyes to the left? Fortunately, this cute little pup belongs to a loving family, but there are many more like him that don’t have a forever home, and are housed in shelters.
As a dog lover, you want to help, and there are several things you can do to help with the care of dogs in need. Obviously adopting a dog from a shelter is the ideal, but that isn’t always something you’re able to do. So I have come up with some ideas that might work for you.
Ways to help dogs in need…
- You may not be able to adopt a dog, but have you ever considered fostering one? Many rescue organizations are looking for people to foster dogs that they have rescued while they find more permanent homes for them. Not only would you be giving a dog a roof over his head, but you could be helping him to become more socialized, which will make him more adoptable.
Volunteer at a shelter. Shelters are often understaffed and are looking for volunteers to help with such activities as feeding, walking, or just socializing with the dogs.- Donate to a shelter. You may not have the time to give, but a monetary donation is always useful and appreciated. Your money will help purchase food, bedding, medications, and bathing supplies.
- Give dog food to local food banks or animal food drives throughout the community. If there isn’t anywhere to donate food, work with a local grocery store or other business, and create your own drop off point.
- Other ways to raise money for homeless dogs…
- Have a bake sale
- Have a car wash
- Host a fundraising walk or race
- Get your kids involved, they’ll love doing it
Use your social media. Post pictures of dogs who are ready for adoption into a loving home. You could work with your local shelter to get pictures and information about the individual pups.- Offer to be transportation. Often rescue groups or shelters need help transporting dogs to new homes, adoption events, or veterinary appointments. Contact the organizations near you to see if they need your help.
- Donate to the ASPCA. This organization works year round on behalf of homeless and abused pets.
